i got lost in the sound
The punchline:

At work today, I found myself involved in a conversation which included Will saying, "Steven's Chinese, of course he likes fried chicken!"

Some backstory:

We have developed this theory, one supported by about ten of us of Chinese descent, by way of Malaysia. This might taint our research somewhat: perhaps the fried chicken theory applies only to Chinese-Malaysians, rather than Chinese people in general; or it might apply to people from South-East Asia.

When Davyd and I had our second wedding feast in Penang, course number three comprised of a vegan fried chicken dish; when we have catered meetings at work, a lack of KFC is always met with protest. My colleagues, who don't understand the vegetarian thing, have tried Utopia's mock fried chicken - it's fried chicken, it has to be sampled (The verify that it is delicious).

And so:

I sort of wish I had left the punchline to float in the ether, so you had no idea what I was talking about, but you can feel free to weigh in on the issue. Obviously I no longer eat fried chicken and I don't want to, but my word do I miss it, sometimes, and the mock fried chicken was so good.

But:

It's still racial stereotyping when you do it to yourself. But that doesn't mean other people get to make the same jokes.

Apparently they added whey to it recently :(

No! That sucks!

There's whey in a few of those things. I was looking at some fake pork at the veggie market recently and that had whey in it too.

Do you ask them when you go there or do you just check the ingredients of the stuff in the frozen section?

I haven't been there for ages on account of no longer living in Perth and not trusting the staff. But ask and look at the freezer is my suggestion.

Yeah, I've had to start just ordering dishes that aren't fake meat. This isn't a big problem for me, as I'm not a huge fan of mock dishes, but I do miss the sweet and sour fish.

Fried Chicken seems to be a much loved dish in Japan, with both the westernised version (furaido chikin) and the Japanese one (karage)...

Yay! Fried chicken. Even though I now rarely eat it as it is so bad for me.

A more accurate and less contentious punch line would be,

"Steven's Alive, of course he likes fried chicken!"

My friend Veronica is Chinese (from Hong Kong, though she moved to Melbourne at 14 and is an Aus citizen), and the other day in Dublin we were looking for food. I said, "Oooh, Chinese?" And she said, "Yeah, always up for Chinese!" and I said, "Yeah, me too. I'd eat it day and night if I could. Is that weird?" and the guy next to us at the bus station where we were having a sit said, "No, but it's RACIST!" and he got up and walked away.

...what?

V. strange.

Wait, what? That is quite strange.

The only thing I can figure is that he took offence at my asking if it was weird that I liked Chinese food. It IS weird - I never had it before around 14, and I just love every dish I've ever tried. I WOULD eat it day and night (sometimes I do, if I have enough left over to take home, yum), and for a white American, that's a bit weird, I think. Veronica is quite keen to take me to Hong Hong and then on to Aus one day, and I was all, "Chinese food in China! CHINESE FOOD IN CHINA!" and she cackled at me.

There's a worse racial stereotype in the US about black people liking fried chicken.

Yeah, I was just about to crack a bad joke, like do Malaysians like watermelon too?

Don't forget the watermelon! And the deep-fried Twinkies.

I think you're forgetting the man who was attempting suicide in Malaysia who was coaxed off the roof by police offering fried chicken.

These days Utopia makes me think of the remote desert community of slight dysfunctionality, distinctive art movement, and probably no fried chicken. No chickens at all. Goanna maybe, wallaby, but no chickens.
